Home

The basic definition for home is a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household.1 To take it into a deeper meaning, home is like a smaller community and each member plays different roles at home. Men, women and children, each role carries different desires, personalities and responsibilities. In the past 50 years, the common issue between men and women was the role that each played with the social standard at home. And now we find find how men and women interact with each other through books, movies and music. Home is like the home plate in a baseball game, that everyone tries to reach it. What happen if there are people can not afford to have a house.

To have a home, we must have a house or a shelter to live in. There are families that are low income families and not able to afford a house, then how can they have a home? And here comes the Habitat for Humanity, it an organization found in 1976 that helps low income families to build their own house, “a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their homes and the homes of others.”2 And their mission is “to eliminate poverty housing from the earth. Habitat has taken its vision of a world with no more shacks to 53 nations. To date, HFHI has completed nearly 60,000 simple, decent, affordable houses around the globe.”2 My experiences of working with this group, I found that everyone were working hard to accomplish something and it was not about making money. In the Fall quarter, my class worked on a project with Habitat for Humanity for Chem 121 and Writ 105. We tried to figure out the safest and good quality materials with reasonable prices to build the houses. And last week, we volunteered to actually be part of the building process. All of us worked very hard, but what do we benefit from it? Of course it was a way to earn community service hours, but more importantly we learned to give and help people who are needed, and instead of give them money, we help them by working with them. When a family has a place to stay, they can start to develop their relationship with each other, their personalities, and the social roles they play at home.

In the traditional role of a woman is often in a lower social level than a man. She is a person that takes care of children, cooks meals, cleans the house and serves the man when he gets back home from work. From the traditional aspect of a woman, she should be a nice girl and her man and family are the most important things in her life. In the past 50 years, the culture and the role of a woman had been changed, even though some reminded to stay the same. In the book The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon which published in 1965, the main character Opedipa found out she was the person to take over her ex-boyfriend's estate after his death.3 As her exploration of her ex-boyfriend's death went on, we can see that she was relaying on men, her ex-boyfriend, husband and men that were met during her exploration. In this example, Opedipa shows that weak side of a woman. She needs to depend on others which were men to make her feel better. On the other hand, some women were strong enough not to be depend on men. A song Piece of My Heart sang by Janis Joplin represented a strong and brave woman that's not afraid to be hurt by men anymore. “And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I've had enough, But I'm gonna show you, baby, that a women can be tough.”4 She wants to show that she can be as tough as the man. She is going to stand up and becoming independent. “Take another little piece of my heart now, baby. (break a…)Break another little bit of my heart, darling, yeah. (have a),”4 from this part of the lyric, we can tell that she might be hurt by man before and she wants to tell the man who broke her heart that she will not be weak anymore. She is welcoming the man to take another piece of her heart and break it, and she will strong enough to take it. In the society, Janis Joplin is a kind of woman that people will give her respect for being strong and independent. But from the point of view of being a good wife and mom, she might not be the one that men would like have.

To marry a good girl was most men's dream, but for girls being good girls can sometime be a nightmare that brings them pressures. Many mothers told their daughters that men only marry good girls, and they should never do anything to break the rules that were created by the society. In the movie Splendor of the Grass, Deanie Loomis was under pressure of being a good girl. She tried not to have sex with her boyfriend Bud before marriage, and it turned out Bud cheated on her with another girl in the school. And later Deanie got some kind of mental issue that her family had to send her away. One thing that passes on in the the family is the concepts they were given. Deanie's mom asked if Deanie blamed her the way she taught her that led Deane's life miserable for a while. And talking about the concepts pass down in the family, it brings up an issue with the gender. In stereotype of mind, that wife must give birth to at least one boy to pass down the last name. I remember one day I asked my dad what would happen if my younger brother was not a boy but a girl, would you have another baby? My dad answered yes. He said that we must have to have at least one boy in the family. Often in the Asian dramas, the parents of man's side would give heavy pressures to their daughter in law to have a baby boy to pass down the last name. And it is still happening in my culture, but more and more people are open minded especially in United States. I have asked a couple people before about what happen if you don't have any boys in the family? They responded me that they don't really care about the gender compares to 50 years ago, it might be a big deal in the family. Even though the woman's role had became more strong and independent, but they were still trying to satisfy her man since a home is important to a woman.

We can see many men started to cook, clean the house and help raise children, but women are still the ones that doing all this works. From books and movie, woman often playing a role that tries to satisfy the man. In the movie Rear Window, Lisa Fremont was a successful woman that had a good job and well educated. Her boyfriend Jefferries thought Lisa was too perfect for him and she will not be able to fit in his life. Lisa tried to change to satisfy what Jefferries wanted. Lisa could have be an independent woman who did not really need to relay on a man, but she chose to stay and be willing to change for Jefferries, and it was only because she loves him. To a successful woman, love is still an important part of her life that makes her willing to do anything to sacrifice for her man. To relate this to Joanna Eberhart in the book The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin, Joanna and her family moved to Stepford and her husband Walter joined the Men's Association.5 One night Joanna caught Walter masturbating on the bed next to her. “ You could have woke me up I would mind. Gee whiz, you don't have to do that,” she said. “I just didn't want to wake you. You were sound asleep,” he said. “well next time wake me,” she said. From this conversation, Joanna was not happy about her husband's masturbation. She was right next to him, but he was rather to done it without her. For Joanna's feeling, she was upset because it looked like that she was not able to satisfy her husband. She failed as a wife. Later in the story, we found out that the Men's Association had a plan which was turning their wives into robots. After Joanna found out the her friends in Stepford had been changed, she wanted to move away. She talked to Walter about it and told him that she won't be herself anymore next summer. She also questioned about Walter the reason why he wanted to move to Stepford. She asked, “Is that why Stepford was the only place to move? Did somebody pass the message to you? Take her to Stepford, Wally old pal; there;s something in the air there; she'll change in four months.” Walter answered, “There's nothing in the water, there's nothing in the air. They changed for exactly the reasons they told you: because they realized they'd been lazy and negligent.” It explains that reason why when Joanna asked her neighbor Carol to come over to have a cup of coffee with her and Carol responded, “Thanks, I'd like to, but I have to wax the family room floor. Night is the only time to do it, until school starts.” Carol had already turned into a robot when Joanna met her. The only reason why the men wanted to turn their wives into robot could be because they wanted their wives to be perfect the way they want them to.

After reading this book, I cam up with a question. Is it true that Walter did not know what was going on in Stepford, or he knew it, and that was why he brought Joanna there? Is it wrong for a man wanting his wife to be perfect or for a woman be what she wants to be? There is no answer for it. The most significant change of women in past 50 years was they've became more independent, but along with the change men's responds and reacts were both positive and negative. The positive would be that they are happy for women to stand up for themselves and able to do anything men can do. And the negative would be the men do not want women to be independent and gain so many rights because once they get what they want, the men won't be needed anymore. Home is like a small community with issues going on between men, women and children. Each role plays a different character with different issues. And speaking of home, for those poor families that can't pay for their own house, Habitat for Humanity is an organization to get help from. I am proud that there is an organization over the nation, also how the women's role changed over these years becoming what they are today.

"Even mainstream magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post began publishing stories about young, college-educated women who drank gin cocktails, smoked cigarettes, daringly rolled their stockings at the knee, and enjoyed sex,” from the history textbook. Woman played an important role started in 1920s by challenged her role in the society, we called her the new woman. Another common representation of woman was housewife. Housewife had less society life than man did and followed the traditional role of women. The new woman was also called the flapper. She did not follow the traditional role of a woman, but to challenge her role in society and views of her boyfriend or husband. The Splendor in the Grass, Attack of the 50ft Woman and Rear Window were the movies made in 1950s and early 1960s. These movies played the confusion, conflicts and pressures a woman was having about her role in the society.

In the Splendor in the Grass, the main woman character named Deanie Loomis, was under pressures of choosing between to be a good girl or a bad girl. Deanie was a high school student that had a boyfriend named Bud Stamper. There were kisses, touches and hugs between her and Bud, but she tried to be a good girl cross not to cross the line when Bud wanted to. Deanie's mom was worrying about Deanie will done something serious with Bud. She told Deanie that a good girl does not have sexual relationship with a guy before marriage. She also said, “ your father did not land a hand on me till we got married. And I only have sex with him is because he enjoyed it and we needed to reproduce.” It was a traditional that good girls followed which Deanie worked hard to force herself to follow it too. Bud wanted to have sexual relationship with Deanie, but Deanie was too well-behaved to take it. So Bud ended up to have have a sexual relationship with another girl that drove Deanie crazy. She kept saying that she wants to die. During this period of the time, when you have sex with someone when you are not married then you will go to hell according to their religion. Deanie was very ill and stayed at home till the someone asked her to go to school dance. She cut her hair short and tried to behave like a flapper. The flapper was like a style of new generation that existed during the Great Depression in 1920s. Flappers were women who followed the latest fashion, wore short skirt, cut hair short, went to parties and flirted with men. She went up to Bud and asked him to have a sexual relationship with her. Bud was surprised and rejected her. She went back to the water fall to commit suicide that where many couples made out included her and Bud. She was saved and sent to a hospital to fix her mental illness and had fell in love with a man who worked there. When Deanie came back home, her mom asked if the way she taught her was wrong. She said that if she does, don't blame her because she is only teaching Deanie the way her mom taught her, and it was the only way she knew. Deanie did not blame her mom. She represented a young woman that was confused with her sexual desires and pressured the stereotype view of the society. And not all the women have a mom around to remind them the traditional role of women.

Another women character in Attack of the 50ft Woman, Nancy Archer, was a rich woman. She was once divorced to Harry Archer, but was back together again. Harry was cheating on Nancy with a girl named, Honey Parker. One day Nancy was driving on the highway, a satellite landed in front of her with a 30ft tall alien in it. She run away and told the cops what she saw, no one believed in her. After she got home, Harry was trying to comfort her after he got back from the bar. Nancy argued with Harry about how he's cheating on her and how much she still love Harry. A day after, Nancy turned on the television, a television news anchor was making fun of the story of her saw a satellite and a 30ft giant. And later Nancy's body was growing larger into a 50ft woman by something alien done to her. When she woke up, the first thing she was looking for was her husband. Harry was like the only thing that mattered to Nancy. In the view of a traditional woman that husband is the most important person to her. She should let her husband be happy and do whatever he asks. Nancy knew that her husband was cheating on her, but she did not really do anything about it. After Nancy grew larger, she went to the town to look for her husband. She found her husband in a bar with Honey. Honey was killed when the roof was breaking in parts by Nancy. Harry was also killed in Nancy's hand because he couldn't breath. Nancy loved Harry so much and to kill Harry was the only way to keep Harry all to herself. Nancy represented a woman that went crazy to get love from her husband. Loving a guy too deep can drive a woman crazy, but it can also change the living style of a woman.

In the movie Rear Window, Lisa Fremont was a successful woman with a job. She has a boyfriend named Jefferies. Jeff was observing his neighbors through his window because he broke one of his leg and had to stay home. One day he was like to a lady that comes everyday to give him a massage. The lady told Jeff that Lisa is the right girl for him and any guys, but Jeff told her that he did not want to get married. He said that Lisa was too prefect for him. Man always like woman that is weaker he is, so he can protect the man. And if the woman is too perfect, than the man won't be able to show the talents he has and the power over the woman. When Lisa was kissing Jeff, he did not kiss her back because he was obsessed with what he saw. Then Lisa asked Jeff why they can't live together and get married, Jeff told her that she won't be able to fit into his life. Jeff reads comic and Lisa reads fashion magazine. While Jeff was observing his neighbors, he saw Mrs. Thorwald was not on her bed anymore since she was too ill to leave her bed. It turned out Mr. Thorwald killed her because he couldn't get any love from his wife. His wife rejected him multiple times when he brought her food and flowers. This action also relates to what Nancy had done to her husband. If they can't get the love from their partner, then they kill their partners. Lisa was trying to help Jeff find evidences for the case of murder. Lisa was also trying to show Jeff that she can change for him. At the end of the movie, Lisa was reading what Jeff reads, but when Jeff fell asleep, she took out her fashion magazine. She showed that she was able to change for the man she loved, but still remained what she was like when no one was watching. Lisa represented a successful woman that was willing to change for her love, but still remaining what she was.

In all three movies, the common thing about them was that they challenged themselves with the view of the society, and the love was the most important thing to them. They were willing to do anything to get the love from their men, even gone crazy. Deanie was a nice girl, but crazy for her boyfriend. Nancy was a normal woman till her husband cheated on her that caused her some health problems. Lisa was a successful and smart woman that willing to change her life style for love. Each of them faced problems that deal with the traditional role of a woman, also they represented different characteristics. Nancy's story was upset first, but she was brave to walk out the sadness and had a happy ending. Nancy had conflicts with her husband all the time and ended up killed him. Lisa didn't really have any conflicts between Jeff, and managed herself well to be with Jeff. Different woman faced different problems in 1950s' movies, but mostly about love, pressures, and conflict between roles of traditional and new women.

Like literature, film can make an argument. In this case, you saw three films from the 50s that portrayed women in a very specific way. Considering the three films (SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, ATTACK OF THE 50FT WOMAN and REAR WINDOW), make an argument that a) synthesizes the three main women in each film and b) touches on the representation of women in the 50s.

In 1950s, the most common representation of the women were housewives and had less social life then men did. In the movies of Splendor in the Grass, Attack of the 50ft Woman and Rear Window, each main woman represented individual woman character in 1950s and early 1960s. The society was a somehow a hand that pulled woman back to where they belong to. The women were often went nuts by not getting what they desired.

In the beginning of the movie Splendor if the Grass, Deanie Loomis was a high school student that had a boyfriend, Bud Stamper. There were kisses, touches and hugs between her and Bud, but she tried to be a good girl cross not to cross the line when Bud wanted to. Ginny was Bud's older sister. She went art school in Chicago, but was having an relationship with a man that she was unmarried to and was ended up sent back home. Ginny was considered as the flapper. The flapper was like a style of new generation that existed during the Great Depression in 1920s. Flappers were women who followed fashion, wore short skirt, cut hair short, went to parties and flirted with men. Bud wanted to have sexual relationship with Deanie, but Deanie was too well-behaved to take it. And Bud ended up to have have a sexual relationship with another girl which drove Deanie crazy. Deanie was mental ill till the someone asked her to go to school dance. She cut her hair short and tried to behave like a flapper. She went up to Bud and asked him to have a sexual relationship with her. Bud was surprised and rejected her. She went back to the water fall to commit suicide that where many couples made out included her and Bud. Later she was sent to a hospital to fix her mental illness and had fell in love with a man who worked there. And Bud was married to a girl he met in a Pizzeria and had babies.

In the Attack of the 50ft Woman, Nancy Archer was a rich women. A day after, Nancy turned on the television, a television news anchor was making fun of the story of her saw a satellite and a 30ft giant. Nancy was mad and broke the television. She asked Harry to go to the desert with her to find the satellite. They were disappointed after searching for a long time. Suddenly, Nancy saw a light the flashed in front of her, they chased and found the satellite. The 30ft tall alien came out and got Nancy, Harry was too scared and ran home. After Harry got home, he was trying the pack up and leave but the house keeper stopped him. They had a fight. The housekeeper called police to find Nancy. Later Nancy was found next to the swimming pool on top of the roof. Doctors found weird blue-color marks on Nancy's neck. Harry and Honey overheard that nurse has to be careful with a mount of shot that's given to Nancy, because too much could kill her. Harry stole the needle shot with overload drug, the nurse followed him. When he was about the give to shot, the nurse turned on the light. They both got shocked. Nancy's body grew larger. Later Nancy woke up to look for Harry, while he was having fun with Honey in a bar. Nancy broke the roof to get out and walked toward the town to find Harry. No could could stop her. Honey was dead when Nancy broke the roof of the bar that something dropped on Honey and died. Nancy got Harry in her hand. It was too tight for Harry in her hand that he couldn't breath and died too. The police gun shot the electric pole which electrocuted Nancy.

Week 5

Children's Play
To compare the play and the movie, I would say that it was very easy to get lost when reading the play because of my English level. There were actions/movements came between the scrpits, so I had to image what the movements are which I kept getting lost reading the play. After watching the movie, I understood the story better. In the movie, they added extra scripts and actions that helped the movie looked more interesting and fun to watch. And I felt I didn't get deeply into the story because when I was reading the play, there were something like "enter the stage right, or exist from the stage left...etc.." It made me felt like the story is so fake, because there were instuctions given.

唯一的徵兆是你說過的話 The only sign given was something you said 累了嗎問問你 Tired? Ask yourself
累了嗎問自己 Tired? Ask myself

My idea was using the photos from 1930s to relate to MEMOERIALIZATION, it also related to my 2nd essay. I mentioned that memoerialization is having things such as photo, media and art works (statues and paintings) to remember events happened in the past. I was trying to combine the video with my culture, so I used a song in my language. The name of the song is "Tired". During The Great Depression, I believe that people were looking for jobs and food to feed their family. "最怕你突然就說要放棄 Afraid you say giving up unexpectedly," if a man chose to give up on the society and life, then he and his family would be hungry and maybe death awaited for them. "是這樣天真是這樣心疼 So innocent so heartache 堅定的眼神有不安的靈魂 The steady eyes with an uneasy soul ," everyone in the picture looked so innocent that causes heart break, and their souls were shaking(scared) from their eyes. They didn't know what to do and what's gonna happen. "想要說的話卻不懂表達 Want to tell but don't know how, " people couldn't express the pressures they were handling, there was no word to describe. "累了嗎問問你 Tired? Ask yourself 累了嗎問自己 Tired? Ask myself," people couldn't say that they were tired because if you decided to take a break, where's your next meal? The translation might not be prefect, but it gives an idea of what I am trying to present.

Memorialization of 228 (Taiwanese White Terror) In Taiwan Compare to the WWI in England

Significant events are mostly remembered or recalled by their importances to the society and to the people. During the World War I, a large number of soldiers were killed, many families lost their important ones. Great Britain (England) had Remembrance Day and built tombstone for the unidentified soldiers that were scarified in the war. 228 was an unforgetful event happened in Taiwan's history. A park, a museum and a memorial day were named after the event.

Great Britain played an important part in the World War I. In Benjamin Montoya's history presentation on April 8, 2009, British had a memorial day called Remembrance Day on 11 November to remember the soldiers that scarified in the World War I, also built the tombstone for those soldiers that were not able to identify. Families of the unidentified soldier can go to the tombstone to remember and call up the memories of their love ones. On the Remembrance Day, British wears poppy flower on the shirt.1 Poppy flower is wore in a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the first world war.2 It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. Taiwan (Formosa as the former name) was once control by Japan and became the first Japanese colony from 1894 to 1945, it was during the period of time of World War II.3

After U.S. dropped atomic bombs in Japan, Japan lost the war and left Taiwan. China sent the Chinese Nationalist Party(Kuomintang) to take over Taiwan after Japanese left. While Taiwan was still under Japan's control, almost every Taiwanese speak only Taiwanese (Hokkien) and Japanese. There was problems with the language when Chinese came to take over Taiwan since they could only spoke Mandarin. In February 27, 1947, a group of people was trading cigarettes unauthorized, because the language was a problem, the officer was end up using violence to take aways all the cigarettes. The officer was trying to scare people always by using his gun, a man stood next to them was accidentally shot. Later many angry Taiwanese people were gather together in Taipei City to rebel the next day. Taiwanese people were mad because Chinese was trying the make profit out of Taiwan's sources. “The new Chinese Governor Chen Yi found the raid-battered Formosans docile. He promptly put his nephew in charge of the Taiwan Co., which bought coal at 200 yen a ton and sold it at 4,000. Black-market gold sold at 300,000 Chinese dollars an ounce, against $180,000 in Shanghai. Even in fertile Formosa, mass starvation threatened,” from Time News.4 To compare the Chinese government and Japanese Government, Chinese soldiers often took money away, ate with paying, used volience, and raped women. Japanese government had strong policy and laws while Taiwan was under controlled by Japan. Because of the differences between Chinese and Japanese, Taiwanese people were mad and looked down on Chinese.5 After seeing all the Taiwanese were out of control, Chen Yi asked for an army from China to help keep everything under control without telling the reason of what made all the Taiwanese mad. The army came, many Taiwanese were killed. Approximately between 150,000 to 280,000 Taiwanese were killed. 228 was the most significant event happened, Many articles, books, videos and images can be found about 228 and WWI.

There are many quotes can be found and were said by the country, family or people who were influenced by the event. In Great Britain, the government tried to tell people that men did not waste their lives. Because of their sacrifice, the country was saved and stayed united. From Ben's power point, “Mark 8: 35-6-- “Fpr whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” and “1 John 2: 2-- “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” Both quotes described honors and respects from us to the soldiers that sacrificed for the country. Writing is a way to keep records of history and feeling. Anything that were written during World War I would consider as history and feelings to express in literature. There were quotes said to tell their thoughts about 228.

In the Time News in June 10, 1946, “Last week "Down with the Governor!" posters appeared all over the island. In two towns, hungry natives burned sugar godowns. Formosans greeted the few visiting Americans with: "You were kind to the Japanese, you dropped the atom on them. You dropped the Chinese on us!"7 This quote was a little funny the first time reading it, but it told the truth of how Taiwanese felt. Some Chinese started to agree with the Formosan, "Fundamentally speaking, China was not qualified to take over . . . she lacks the men . . . technique . . . commodities . . . capital. She governs, but is inefficient. She takes, but she does not give. This is the government's shame."said by Ta Rung Pao, China's counterpart of the New York Times.7 In this quote, supports were given from other Chinese. It was an important step to help Taiwanese stop this mess. Aftermath of WWI and 228, there is a memorial day to remember the importance of the event and plenty of articles, videos and images are available for people to view. For example, the memorial foundation of 228 and the museum of 228 both have websites for people to click in and find update for activities.8

In England, there is a tombstone built for unidentified soldiers , and families of unidentified soldiers would go to the tombstone to remember their be loved family. Also British wears Poppy Flower on the Remembrance Day to show their respect. In Taiwan, a park named after 228 event, 228 Memorial Park (was Taipei New Park). Also a museum was opened in 2008 that keeps records of documents used and pictures taken of 228 event.9 What would happen if we do not have anything to remember events like those?

History teaches us things that we should not repeat and things we should keep for our own good. We do not want people died for nothing. They scarified their lives to save their countries and teach other a lesson. In WWI, if British did not have a Remembrance Day and tombstone built, families of dead soldier would not be satisfied the reason of men losing their lives. If Taiwanese did not have a 228 Memorial Day, park and museum for the event, the government and the people will still in an endless bloody fight. And because of what happened and lives scarified, that created the countries and the world today. It is important to keep memorialization to remember the events because without the events and wars in the past, we won't be what we are today.
