AOD #11 (1st quarter)

Building Social Capital
Key Club is a club that gets involve with our community the most from all the clubs I joined. We even have convention every year. What we do the most is to volunteer and help people to improve our relationship with others and our community.

Also if you have some talents like drawing, singing, or tutoring, you can volunteer in a preschool or elementary school to hang out with the children. Just like a program call “big brother & big sister”, that you read books or play games with children after school. So I would say that Key Club is a club that you might want to consider to join, it helps you with community service hours and get the opportunity to interact with the community you live in.

Mentoring
Religion is very powerful that can guide some of us the way that is the best. I saw a Taiwanese article online. It is about a guy who used drug and send to the jail. He quit the drug and started to believe in religion. The religion was Christianity. He became a priest, and tried to convince people (or gangs) not to follow the way he chose to do.

And I think it is very nice that this guy became a thoughtful and smart person and try to convince to people to choose a better way to live, not wasting times on getting yourself into troubles. So I believe religion is very power and needed in our community. Maybe religion might not mean that much to me, but to have something believe is really a way to get some pressure out of me.

Diversity
Coming to America was like folding up my eyes and can’t see what’s at front of me. Before I came I did not know that there were so many people from other countries immigrated here. I was so surprised and had to get used to live in an environment like this.

Back in my country, there are some people moved to Taiwan, but you don’t see them often. Taiwan is still a country that full of Asian. After I came, I made friends with people from the different background and shared our cultures with each other. It is very nice to know and live in a country that full cultures and we are rich

Those are some of the videos show there are voices from different countries support Taiwan, even though they don't live in Taiwan. They are some Taiwanese ask their friends to support Taiwan in different diversity group (Diversity & Buliding Social Capital). They had march and commercials ( in ths sky >UN for Taiwan at New York) Especailly, people in the first video are seniors. They are old and don't live in Taiwan. But they still love Taiwan with their hearts. many people are working hard, trying to get freedom and fairness from the world. Even though I am not soing any of these activites, but I still want to ask everyone that if you believe Taiwan is an independent country, please support us. Let those Taiwanese be free from the fearness of wars and fights.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz1aHksJN0c (English) (China says Taiwan is a threat to peace? )

The main statement of this video is "Freedom without fear is a basic human right. " CHina had kept attack Taiwan past years, tries to take over Taiwan. But why does China has this action? Isn't this action show that China does not believe Taiwan is still part of them, it's a country now. And that's why CHIna is trying to use force to take it down. And the Director-General Department of Arms Control. MOFA, China answered how U.S.A treat this issue, " We condemn this idea. But some guys in the world treat taiwan as if it is one of their states. And even more important than any of thier states." And then the Former Chinese Premier declared, " WHo ever seeks/help independence for Taiwan, will come to an unhappy end." Also the representive of China said, "Inviting Taiwan join W.H.O is illegal," when help is needed in Taiwan.

From what i see from this video, Taiwanese are risking their lives for freedom and independance. The public dialogue and polical imagination are very important here. They are something that we should concern related the problems between China and Taiwan.

This news is about the Chinese basketball team v.s. one of the Taiwanese basketball team. The first day of the game, one of the Chinese basketball player gave a black eye to one of the Taiwanese basketball play. The next day, the Chinese basketball player used his elbow to hit on one of the Taiwanese basketball player, which caused the Taiwanese player has bleeding nose for a long time (could be hours).

The Taiwanese basketball coach said that purpose of this game was trying to build relationship with the Chinese basketball team. But when the violence started, the meaning of playing the game was lost. Many people said that the reason why the Chinese player did it was because the player was too proud of himslef and look the Taiwanese down, that's why he started to hurt others. I won't say this is the main reason because there are always a lot conflict between sport players. But continued violence is not allow, especially using violence again and again to the same team.

This is a video that has voices of people from different diversities. The people are American, Native Taiwanese, Hakka, Taiwanese(was not born in Taiwan)... so on. I am very glad that there are people from different diversities support Taiwan that much. I can tell you I am very touched. And I believe there are some reasons why for them to support Taiwan. ANd one of them must be that they found that Taiwan has its own power to run itself as a independent country. And this is an example of buliding social capital.

A representive from U.N. is giving the respond about for Taiwan join U.N. One of the journalist asked the representive about, "is Taiwan will never become a member of U.N. when it has its human history or support by other countries (U.N. membera)?" Representive answered, " It is for the U.N. members to make the decision." Journalist asked, " How can they decide on it when they can't even respond to their (taiwan) request?"

In this news, we can tell that U.N. members are having a hard time to making decision whether sould they let Taiwan join U.N. or not, because one of the powerful member is strongly disagree with it, which is China. From other news i watch, it shows a lot countries are sort of understand China's pressure to male the decision. Since China is one of the largest country and disagree with it, it a long way for Taiwan to work on to join U.N.

It's a news about two conflict happened in a international youth sport competition (in Thailand). A Taiwanese girl won the first place (swimming) and was bringing the Taiwanese flag with her to the stage. But one of the Chinese representive took away the Taiwanese flag from the girl and then started to aruge and fight. ANother Taiwanese boy won the 2nd place in the swimming competition, while the boy was walking toward to the stage, a Chinese girl took away the flag. And then when the boy was on the stage getting the prize, a Chinese representive took away the flag again.

From this event, we can see how Chinese strongly disagree Taiwan is a independent country. From my point of view, I think the players have the right the bring up the flag they they believe that represents them. I understand why those Chinese people did it, but we still need to repect each other and not use violance. It could be a example of creative conflict if all of us are willin got learn and change, including Taiwanese too, not just Chinese.

This video is about the routine for the Olympic flamen 2008. The routine is to start from Japan to China, China, and then from Taiwan back to Hong Kong. Taiwan refused about the routine because from the routine, we can tell that the last 3 stops represent the terrtories of China. So Taiwan suggest change the routine from Japan to Taiwan, Taiwan to Hong Kong and then back to China. Thefirst routine shows Taiwan is part of CHina, and the second routine shows Taiwan is a country (draw in the video).

The Chinese Olymic responsor was on a phone call or a speech said " Taiwan is China's terrtory. And you really think ... treat it as a country?" So we are still not sure how it will go, but there is a lot negotiations and active listening that they will have to work on.

I found a video in youtube. It talks about a treaty/policy that Canada and China was having trouble with. The treaty/policy is about trading between Canada and China. China says you have to admit that Taiwan belong to China and support China for getting Taiwan in the future to able to sign the treaty. And then Canada came up with its respond, “1. Canada doesn’t want to be a part of it (conflict between China and Taiwan). 2. Is this means that if you want to be in a partnership, I will have to help you take down Taiwan and give it to you? 3. For what reason I should admit Taiwan is part of China. If I want to have trades with Taiwan, I can’t use China’s permission. I have to get the permission from Taiwan.

I was so surprise that Canada came up with such smart responds. And that was true that you can’t force someone to do something to make a deal. I used to active listening skill; I found out everything Canada said was true. I learned instead of saying no, we can find some ideas or ways to convince others by looking deeper into the meaning of the actions.

I watched a youtube video this week. The video is about a Chinese representive is giving a speech. The speech is about, “We, the China government doesn’t agree letting Taiwan join W.H.O. because Taiwan is not a country. Taiwan is part of China…….. so on.”

From his speech, it sounds like Taiwan is still under control by China’s government and gets benefit from China. But from what I know, Taiwan has its own government, and Taiwan does not really get helps from China (government). China had public dialogue speeches showed how much they care about Taiwan as their own people, but attacked Taiwan 60 years ago, tried to use force to take over Taiwan. China fired Taiwan for 3 days 3 nights and gave up because it took too long to take down Taiwan. And Taiwan had already developed a strong government of its own, and I as a Taiwanese believe that there is no way for me to obey the Chinese government because of different point of views. SO even though China take over Taiwan, most of the Taiwanese won’t interact with China well.

2nd Quarter- AOD #1

Issue: China thinks Taiwan belong to them, and does not admit Taiwan as a country

There are two main parties in Taiwan’s government. One is called Nationalist Party (Blue) and another is called Democratic Progressive Party (Green). The blue party was the first party and was most likely obey China. The green party is formed later by the citizens of Taiwan. Now the biggest problem we have is that China is not letting Taiwan join United Nation.

China said that Taiwan is not a country, its part of China. And to be able to join U.N., you have to be a country. The Green party started an act called “U.N. for Taiwan,” and going to have a vote for the independence of Taiwan. The Blue party does not agree with it. They do want Taiwan to join U.N., but of we have the acts like that, will mess up the relationship with China, which mean a fight or war might start. So I believe that a lot of negotiations are needed here.
